Here we have a rare Spanish advertising card picturing movie actress, stage performer and "cuple" singer, Raquel Meller. A beautiful image, this remains in good overall condition, with some soft creasing. This vintage card measures an approximate 3" x 4-1/2".
She was popular enough to make the cover of Time magazine (April 26, 1926). The actress and singer, Raquel Meller was born on March 10, 1888, in Spain, as Francisca Marqués López. She started performing on stage at an early age, and was mostly a "cuple singer" (couplets). Couplets were, basically, naughty songs and Raquel was considered to have been the best. Artists such as Charlie Chaplin and Sarah Bernhart considered Raquel Meller to have been genius. She performed extensively in the United States under contract for the Schuberts, and performances broke box office records at the time.
Raquel Meller became a certified movie actress in 1919 with her first performance on film in "La Gitana Blanca". She would ultimately perform in less than a dozen movies but is still considered one of the most gifted Spanish performers of all time. Raquel Meller passed away on July 26, 1962.
