On August 9, 1945, the United States detonated the second nuclear bomb used during World War II. The weapon, named "Fat Boy", was detonated at an altitude of 1800 feet over the city of Nagasaki, Japan. Released from the B-29 bomber "Bockscar", the weapon had an approximate yield of 21 kilotons of TNT. Estimates put the initial death toll at 40,000 civilians.
